Mileurista

The "mileuristas" (those young people that earn one thousand euros a month), or the "nimileuristas" (those that don't even earn that much) blame "others" for the excesses that have now condemned them to a very high unemployment rate, low salaries and limited prospects to improve in the near future.  In Spain, with the unemployment rate for young people hovering around 50%, even the nimileuristas are among the lucky ones.  However, when they talk about excesses they mainly have in their mind economic excesses.  They still don't make the connection that the real excesses of the past 200 years have been environmental, more than just economic ones.  In the past, the Earth was so big with respect to the global economy that all economic systems essentially regarded it as infinite and thus all economic issues were just economic issues.  Not anymore.  Today the global economy is as big, or maybe even bigger than the planet itself.  The result is that there will not be any more economic growth in a global scale.  Maybe some countries might have spurts of growth (while others shrink) but globally, economic growth is over.  Government leaders and economists (20th Century economists, that's it) are puzzled no end that in spite of all the "stimulus" spending, low interest rates, bailout after bailout of Greece, and all other conventional economic measures to jump start the economy, the "recovery" just doesn't materialize.

And it won't happen.  Things will only get worse before they... get even worse.  Let's face it: economic growth on a global scale is over.  

It's going to take some time for governments, economists and the people in general to accept this new reality.  Things are thus going to get ugly in the short term in many places.  People are going to blame the government (incumbents all over the world will continue to get replaced just like it has been happening at an accelerated pace sine 2008), the "one percent", the Jews, what have you... but the fact is that through our irresponsible past economic growth (and in China they are still embarked in the most irresponsible economic growth ever) we have essentially reached the physical limits of planet Earth.  The "indignados" and "occupy" movements will look extremely mild in comparison with the social unrest that is coming our way.

We have reached the day of reckoning.  Our material expectations have to be tamed and tamed fast.  Our children and specially grandchildren will have a much more limited economic outlook.

On the other hand, it doesn't mean happiness has to suffer.  No, if we reduce our expectations to something very, very modest, then anything we receive will be a real gift.

It was good while it lasted, but we have entered a new stage in humanity: an era of vastly reduced expectations; an era of zero economic growth.

Próximo Presidente de México

Estamos por seleccionar al próximo presidente de México entre ustedes tres.  ¿Qué es lo que estamos buscando en este nuevo líder del país?

1. Que no prometa mucho.  Sabemos que prometer mucho (si tienen intensión de cumplir) implicaría más impuestos.  No queremos más impuestos.  Por lo tanto queremos un presidente que no prometa mucho.

2. Cambios graduales pero no drásticos.  Es imposible hacerlo todo en seis años.  Si tratamos de movernos más rápido de lo posible terminamos retrocediendo (ahí está el ejemplo de Venezuela que por quererse mover muy rápido ya se quedó atrás).

3. Una clara visión energética.  Este es uno de los asuntos más urgentes para México y para el mundo.  Los combustibles fósiles van a escasear cada vez más, además de que es insostenible seguir inyectando todo el dióxido de carbono a la atmósfera que estos combustibles producen.  Por lo tanto es imperativa una estrategia energética para México.  En estos momentos vamos caminando directo al abismo energético.  En este país tenemos mucho sol y viento PERO la energía base más confiable y que no emite grandes cantidades de dióxido de carbono es la nuclear.  Necesitamos invertir fuertemente en energía nuclear en este próximo sexenio.  Y por otra parte, no se trata de reducir el precio de los combustibles, al contrario, se trata de ir preparando a México para un mundo en el que los combustibles van a ser extremadamente caros.  Necesitamos incentivar fuertemente la eficiencia energética.  Entre otras cosas, las SUVs deben pasar de ser un símbolo de status a un símbolo de despilfarro irresponsable.  También es importante desincentivar la compra y uso del automóvil particular.

4. No podemos tapar el sol con un dedo.  Mientras exista demanda de droga, existirá la producción y tráfico de la misma.  México debe seguir aliándose con el resto América Latina para enfrentar al principal consumidor de droga y productor del armamento utilizado para proteger su tráfico: los USA.  Al menos algunos tipos de drogas se deben legalizar en el continente americano en los próximos seis años.

5. Manejar las instituciones del gobierno con relativa competencia.  Es imposible eliminar la corrupción y otras ineficiencias pero al menos esperamos calificar a este gobierno, en retrospectiva, como uno razonablemente competente.

6. No queremos un presidente carismático, ni "muy querido", ni que "encienda las masas", ni "amigo del pueblo", ni que se convierta en un payaso.  Queremos que cumpla con su trabajo de manera razonablemente competente, sin hacer mucho ruido, sin robar demasiada cámara, sin gastar demasiado en "imagen".  En pocas palabras, NO queremos otro Vicente Fox.  Queremos que tenga los piés en la tierra e invierta su tiempo estratégicamente en lo posible, no en lo imposible.

P.D.  Gabriel: de cierta manera eres el mejor candidato a la presidencia.  Pero como decía Richard Nixon, "la política es el arte de lo posible", y no es posible que Nueva Alianza gane la presidencia.  Es una pena.
